I didn't move up my first pregnancy because of my medical issues in any way,
but we did make a decision to get pregnant significantly sooner than we might
otherwise have planned because of my mother's terminal illness and my
mother-in-law's advanced age. We wanted both of them to have the opportunity
to meet a grandchild.
So we stopped using birth control about three months after we got married.
Our other reason was career issues -- I wanted to have my first baby in grad
school so I didn't feel like I'd have to interrupt my career right at the
beginning to take maternity leave. We did a lot of talking and a lot of
planning and a lot of people thought we were crazy for intentionally having a
child while we were both in grad school, but it worked out beautifully for us.
This second pregnancy was delayed the other way -- we were just talking about
trying again when my mother passed away, and I needed some significant time to
grieve before I was ready to bring another child into the world. I'd say we
added at least a year to our time frame because of that. But again, overall I
think the timing has worked out very well for us.
