What is the cause of irregular period?
When a young girl has a irregular period, or when a woman approaches the menopause, it is common that its rules are few or too spaced. This is normal, and because in both cases ovulation does not occur every month, a fact that causes hormonal imbalance in the menstrual cycle and thus the aforementioned disorders.
Typically, over time (months) young woman start having regular periods or rules and that the adult female disorders cease monthly restoring itself against any rules (amenorrhea) Final (menopause).
However a large group of women persist too spaced rules, and typically have only one or two rules every six months. It is very unlikely that there is a serious underlying cause, but these women often turn to your doctor or a gynecologist more often for the reassurance and offer them an explanation to treatment. The gynecologist after questioning, exploring and practicing appropriate tests to rule out that the patient there is no hormonal problems ( cysts , tumors, infections etc.. genital location) as the cause of the disorders. Discarded this, you can ask the patient the need to begin hormone treatment to normalize the rule or if wishing to be pregnant put a treatment that stimulates ovulation.
The most common cause of irregular menses in young women (20-30 years) is a disorder called poly cystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a very common condition, affecting 10% of women.
In PCOS ovaries are larger than normal and have a large number of small cysts (follicles of less than a centimeter) and also a hormonal imbalance. As a result, women do not ovulate regularly and so their rules tend to be infrequent. The ovaries produce male hormone (testosterone, androstenedione), although in much smaller quantities than are characteristic of the testes. In PCOS these male hormones are produced in larger amounts than normal, it is still responsible for the frequent presence of acne and male pattern hair or hirsutism (located on chin, sideburns, around the nipples and abdomen).
The diagnosis of PCOS is made doing a blood test to measure hormone levels and ultrasound Trans vaginal ovarian.
You only need to treat this disorder when the woman is very concerned about the irregularity of its rules, when you have difficulty getting pregnant or when the acne or hirsutism associated carrying becomes a cosmetic problem. Treatment in these cases is making special oral contraceptives (pill) to have a hormone (progestin) that takes an opposite effect to the skin abnormalities causing male hormones.
